HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Sadly the new year has not started off well for Kenya. The pride Kenyans had in being a role model of peace and stability for other strife-torn African countries has been shattered by greed and opportunism. Luckily the trouble has been contained to certain areas, mainly in Western Kenya, which is very far from here, and we at Diani House are all fine; we still have guests both here and on safari who are enjoying our beautiful country ... but the beaches and parks are pretty empty, and many hotels and lodges have had to close ... too many Kenyans have lost their livelihood. Throughout these difficult times, the great majority of Kenyans have been committed to maintaining peace and have been devastated by the disruptions caused by a few. The friendly welcome that tourists normally receive from Kenyans continued throughout the problems; these Kenyans have been a great credit to the country and certainly to the tourism industry. Our earnest prayer for the new year is for our 'leaders' to put aside their personal ambitions in order to restore peace so that we can all try to get back to normal. |
