SHIMBA HILLS AND TSAVO - Safari just a few hours from the beach
|
The
Shimba Hills National Reserve
lies in the hinterland of Kenya’s south coast, less
than an hour's drive from Diani
Beach. The hills afford spectacular views down towards the coast and with
their butterfly-filled tropical rain forests, river valleys and open
plains, are home to a variety of wild animals and birds, including
elephant, giraffe, buffalo, leopard and the dramatically beautiful and
rare sable antelope. Half day, full day and overnight
safaris can be arranged, with guided walking options inside and near the
reserve. Our preferred accommodation is Mukurumuji Tented Camp, which
offers old fashioned safari comfort and special opportunities for
involvement with the local community. For more
information on Mukurumuji and the Camp Kenya Life Program visit

The
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary
is situated on an age-old elephant route between the forest to the north and
the Shimba Hills to the south. Mwaluganje is a community owned conservation
initiative which was launched in the early 90’s to reduce human /
elephant conflict. The community now earns more from tourism than they did
from
farming and the elephants have the freedom to roam without fear of reprisal
from angry farmers. The cycad-filled sanctuary is home to other wildlife
such as buffalo, leopard, waterbuck, warthog and a host of
colorful birds.
Hikes may be taken to the glittering 'Kitsanze' falls or to one of two
sacred forests or ‘kayas’.
